Savage Serial Numbers Search
Pick a model from the left hand menu. Our database contains values of serial numbers through 566,000 which ended the year 1950. Serials did not strictly run sequentially. Therefore, dates may be a year different, especially near the 'boundaries'. Enter the serial number (leave out the ',' or '.' ) of your Savage 1895/1899/99 in the box below. SAVAGE MODEL NINETY-NINE SERIALIZATION Serial Numbers At Year End 1899 to 1950: 10,000 1899 13,400 1900 19,500 1901 25,000 1902 35,000 1903 45,000 1904. The physical location of the serial number on a Savage rifle varies, but some are found on the bottom of the receiver. The best way to look up serial number information for a Savage rifle is to visit the gun manufacturer's web site and select the Part Finder tab.
All the threads on the forum requesting the date of manufacture are getting a little out of hand and thus we (the staff) have come to the conclusion that we will no longer be dating any rifles with a serial number beginning with a letter. This is because these guns aren't that old and the letter prefix itself will give you a relative idea of when the rifle was manufactured. The 'dating' service is intended more for dating and documenting the older collectable guns that are no longer in production and were made prior to 1968.Letter Prefix | Start Date | End Date |
A | October 1968 | February 1972 |

Savage Rifle Serial Number Dating
Additional Notes:- Savage started using the serial number letter prefix to signify their compliance with the Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 and differentiate their firearms that were made before (no letter prefix) and after (with prefix) the GCA went into effect on October 22, 1968.
- The 'F' prefix range is broken up into two groups:
- S/N F498821 or lower were made while the company was owned by an investment company while working to come out of bankruptcy protection.
- S/N F498821 and above were made after Ron Coburn and his investors purchased the company on November 1, 1995.
- The 'G' prefix coincided with the change to the AccuTrigger and the round-back receiver.
- Note that we don't have definitive data on newer guns with the J, K and N serial number prefixes at this time.
- You will notice that L and M were skipped as letter prefixes. L was likely skipped as it could be easily misidentified as an 'I' or '1'. M had previously been used exclusively for the Savage 10ML and 10ML-II muzzleloaders.
