Roland Cakewalk Instrument Definitions

For example, you might have a Roland synth receiving on MIDI channels 1 through 9, a Roland drum machine receiving on channel 10, and a basic GM-compatible synth receiving on channels 11 through 16. In this case, you’d use three different instrument definitions for your one and only MIDI output. New 128-Voice Sound Engine. Like the Fantom-X keyboards, the Fantom-XR module is based on Roland's powerful new sound generator chip. This chip delivers maximum audio processing performance at a great price - including an expressive stereo 4-tone synthesis engine with 128-voice polyphony.

The patch names and other characteristics of each particular MIDI module are supplied by the manufacturer, and are contained in an instrument definition file, which is a text file written in a format Cakewalk can read. Many of these files come with Cakewalk, and many more are available at Cakewalk’s website, and also at www.lilchips.com. Instrument definition files have the extension .ins and can contain a definition for only one instrument, or definitions for several instruments. For example, the file Roland.ins contains definitions for many Roland modules. The file Misc.ins contains miscellaneous definitions that might include your instrument if you don’t see a specific file for it. You can find these files in your Cakewalk folder. The file Master.ins contains all the instrument definitions currently loaded into Cakewalk, and determines the list of instruments that appears in the Assign Instruments dialog box.

You can already do this with JD-XI Manager. Each synth part has it's own save dialogue, even the drums. I have all the factory patches organized into folders. I also have all of my own presets organized separately. That took awhile but it is a beautiful thing.Roland

The problem is that you are chained to the computer when you do this. While it's great to have all your patches nice and tidy in separate folders if you wanted to take the JD-Xi on the road you have to lug the whole mishagosh along with you.
What I am proposing is the ability create or modify a single patch and save it without all the additional cruff to it's own slot with a simple press of a write button.
Sadly, my guess is that it's simply not doable with the current hardware/firmware configuration. :(
